Beginner Class: ASL 1B
ASL 1B is the next step beyond “beginner”. Students will continue to practice basic greetings and conversational skills. They will increase their signed vocabulary and knowledge of Deaf culture norms. Students will continue learning numbers and different ways to sign them. Topics covered will include personal likes and dislikes, activities, living situations, families and life events. Students continue to use role shifting and will begin learning narratives as well as other grammatical features of ASL.
Class is recommended for age 14 and up. Under 14 may be considered if taking class WITH a parent or adult family member.
RECOMMENDED FOR: Students who have completed ASL 1A with ASL Champs, or students who have had some exposure to ASL and are confident fingerspelling ABCs, signing numbers 1-20, can introduce themselves and have short basic conversations using ASL structure. Students entering ASL 1B should have a good understanding of some basic Deaf Culture norms.
